Once again Via Allegro is listed in the top ten restaurants in Toronto by Toronto Life Magazine, fourth best says James ChattoA soothing welcome at the door, the unexpected size and flamboyance of the room, one of the biggest wine and spirits list on the planet.  The mood is that of a crowded party catering to all tastes, whether simple, traditional, extravagant or avant-garde.  Their best work is often a combination of these categories: a sliced terrine of octopus puttanesca, for instance, ringed with clams and dressed with salsa verde.  Fascinating wines by the glass are well matched by Allegro’s team of Sommeliers

“Best of Toronto Winner” Awards and accolades are nothing new for Dine.TO’s “Best of TO” winner, Via Allegro.  When the proprietor’s set out to open a restaurant the goal was to open one with great passion for food and drink—not to mention his personality.  In eleven short years, Via Allegro has earned four diamonds from the CAA/AAA, won Whiskey Magazine’s “Great Whisky of the World” accolade, a DiRoNA award as well as Wine Spectator’s Grand Award 2009 for their outstanding wine list.

The Year’s Best Beef a brisket from Via Allegro’s pasture-to-kitchen program-is braised in Brunello to the very pink of tenderness.  They serve it over creamy polenta dotted with speck, grana padano and roasted shallot butter.  A tangle of fried potato threads, wild mushrooms in a cream sauce and reduced braising liquids add crunch, smoothness and intensity.

Bites of Passion with an outstanding selection of New and Old World wines, Via Allegro pairs the right bottle with any of its pristine Mediterranean menu items.  Based on a cooking philosophy called “The Three Sisters,” executive chefs incorporate an Italian approach, French presentation, and California flair.  Sample a selection of exquisite appetizers, or enjoy wild game followed by a delectable dessert.  The upscale venue is also large enough to host friends and family at your next private function.

The wine list here “makes the average phone book look like a paperback in comparison” says Toronto wine consultant and master Sommelier John Szabo.  Though they’ve got everything covered here—from Mouton Rothschild dating to 1893 to 300 Canadian wines—they are known for their breadth and depth in Italian wines, particularly their mighty Tuscans and Amarones.

Raising the Bar for the wine lists in Canada you know a restaurant is serious about its wine program when 30 seats are removed to make way for a 20,000-bottle wine showcase in the middle of the dining room.  Via Allegro is a large, open room, with a tile floor, high ceiling and ornate décor.  There’s plenty of wrought iron, a Murano glass chandelier, Novaro fish sculpture and solid maple tables and chairs etc.

Wine Spectator Magazine New York

Consistently lauded as one of Toronto’s best restaurants, Via Allegro has amassed a jewel box worth of awards and acclamations (including “Diamonds,” “Golden Spoon,” and exclusive rights to serve “Platinum™” artisanal beef).
